We the Phunks: Not The Declaration Of Independence

A Small Manifesto For An Indie Web3

Web3 culture should not be co-opted by corporations attempting to colonize web3 and convert the open web into a proprietary walled garden. The community must support an open, free ecosystem for decentralized technologies that offer a fundamental shift in our relationship with technology and one another.

A Web3 movement must be rooted in community and peer-to-peer collaboration. We cannot rely on centralized finance, corporate brands or entertainment conglomerates for this infrastructure. We must build it ourselves. If we want control over our digital lives, we must own the platforms we use to communicate, interact, transact and connect.

DMCA notices should not be used to take down discourse and creativity unlocked and enabled by Web3. Nor should it be used to silence legitimate software, art, movement or community development related to Web3, nor in an attempt to control and regulate protocols and apps so they work only within a closed-wall environment:

DMCA notices should not be used against websites or people engaging in derivative or remix based work, including, but not limited to: content aggregation and curation [e.g., A Web3 version of Hacker News], video remix [e.g., YouTube-style content], or file format conversion [e.g., .doc to .pdf]. DMCA notices should not be used in an attempt to censor art pieces.

Public permissionless networks should remain truly public and resist becoming beholden to any single entity for access. To achieve this, we advocate open standards that ensure power remains with end-users, who should be able to choose which technologies best suit their needs while fostering healthy competition in the market.

Users should not be locked-in to any particular platform. The market will be won through the best experiences that draw users away from other platforms. This means taking a stand for interoperability and portability, ensuring openness and choice for users and service providers.

We are at a critical juncture. Web3 promises to fundamentally transform our relationship to technology, one another and the institutions that govern us. While there are benefits to unfettered access to information by centralized authorities, it has led to unintended consequences which have undermined democracy. We believe that decentralization will enable autonomy of thought, expression and action while protecting the rights of every person online.

Web3 is an ecosystem that should be built, owned and governed by its users. This movement empowers people to craft their own experiences with technology outside the constraints of any particular central authority or middleman. It is about ensuring everyone has full ownership over their digital lives. It is about empowering communities to build a fair and open web.

Web3 is the standard for a free, decentralized internet where the users shape the future of how we live online. We believe in an inclusive and permissionless ecosystem where everyone is welcome to participate.

We believe in free speech and an open web for everyone. Web3 technologies should not be limited to just those with the resources and platform to develop, host and distribute apps on top of the proprietary infrastructure.

We stand for a more distributed future where users have the freedom to own their data and build upon it as they see fit.

The community will continue to be vigilant in defending the open, free Web3 that can unlock human potential from those who want to lock up digital technology for themselves alone.
